SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

Payir employs health animators to raise awareness, educate and monitor the health of individuals in these villages. We aim for 1 health animator for a population of 1000. The overall objectives of this healthcare model are:

  • Creating awareness and providing information on health determinants such as nutrition, basic sanitation & hygienic practices in the villages.
  • Counseling women on child birth preparedness, safe delivery, breastfeeding and complementary feeding, immunization, and contraception.
  • Ensuring maximum utilization of government health schemes by working in liaison with the primary health center. Payir’s Community Care Center serves as a referral center for the local PHC and vice versa.
  • Creating and maintaining Child health survey records
  • Rendering regular follow up care to patients with chronic problems like leprosy, tuberculosis, diabetes, cancer, AIDS, high blood pressure etc
  • Provide school health education

There were 5 health animators in Payir by Jan 2017, who were covering 4 villages and roughly 7500 villagers. With the funding support from Friends of Payir, USA, Payir employed 9 more women as part Community Health Workers (CWH), to expand our reach to 9 clusters in 7 villages and about 12000 people. These women were trained in various aspects of our Community Health Program which helped them gain confidence in handling people and delivering verbal messages and solutions to their health problems. Some of the activities these CHWs undertook are:

  • talk about nutrition, hygiene, common illnesses, home remedies
  • referred serious patients to Payir’s trusted referral network– 190 referrals this year
  • talk to adolescent girls about menstrual hygiene, expectant and young mothers on nutrition, breast feeding and child development
  • monitor under five children and measure their weight monthly and maintain a growth chart
  • identify undernourished children in the community and provide supplementary nutrition
  • organize group discussions once a week in each village on general health awareness –

Together this team organized a total of 502 Discussions in 9 clusters of 7 villages.
